description:I define my work as 'functional objects', which are more expressive than mere functional. Take a chair for instance. Most people consider it as a piece of furniture, which should be of the utmost comfort to relax on. To me however, the lack of such comfort could really be more artistic and meaningful. So I will go for object language instead of function. In its construction, the intended function is just a starting point, which is sometimes clearly present in the final form and sometimes not. It's a game between function and object language which always ends in the object language as winner of the conquest and function winks at you from the sideline.
In my work you will see the development of abstract, static objects into kinetic objects, which either might be put into motion manually or by artificial means. I am constantly researching how things work and move and try to use these mechanisms in my own way. In combination with all kinds of materials such as mere garbage and junk or disposed things such as old ball-bearings, motors, manufacturing material, fabrics, polyester and so on, creations of art are formed which are, as it were, inventions themselves.
At this point there is a new development inside my work. A sort of balance arises between the amazement of technical ingeniousness and my object language. The consequence is that my work becomes more monumentally of nature. This change you can see clearly in the objects Water object nr 3 and nr 5. Water object nr 3 shows the technical ingeniousness while nr 5 hide the technical ingeniousness. It looks like the wipwap moves from itself and the grass get sprinkled of itself.

2008 - Water Object nr 5 from Karin ter Waarbeek

2008 - Water Object nr 5

Dimension:400 x 80 x 280cm(lxwxh)
Material:Iron, steel, gras, water, hydraulic pumps
Description:On the picture you see a detail of the object. I designed it for the 2nd World Scientific Congress Challenges in Botanical Research and Climate Change at the university of Delft , TU Delft, in the Netherlands. My startingpoint was the garden itself that functions as a laboratory for the university. My object has been an examination in forms, the different ways grass grows and how many ways water can flow. I presented this in different ways in the object. The use of grass is a reference to the research of a scientist.
